Believe it or not there are some things we all can do when washing our cars to lessen the impact on the environment and conserve our natural water resources. Following some of these tips will help you go for greener car washing.
Put your car on the lawn when washing it.
You can kill two birds with one stone washing your car and watering the lawn at the same time. This also helps to prevents contaminated water from getting into the drainage system which will eventually end up in our water reservoirs. When certain chemicals found in car washing solutions end up in our water system they provide breeding nutrients for algae and other harmful effects to our water system.
Don’t run the water
The best way to conserve water is using it only when needed. Buying an inexpensive adjustable nozzle with pressure settings is a great way to cut back on letting the water run while you’re washing. Only use water to rinse your car and cut back on wasting your water and utility cost.
Washing solutions
Make sure you carefully read the instructions on the detergent used to wash your car and follow the measuring recommendations. There are environmentally safe and economical car washing solutions that won’t contaminate your grass or the environment.
Bucket and sponge
Most people simultaneously wash and rinse their cars; this is neither conserving water nor time. You end up using more water to hose off dirt from your car than you can image. Give your self a little exercise by using a bucket of soapy water and a sponge and only using the hose to rinse the entire car once your done washing.
Find a shaded area
It is a know fact that water rapidly dissipates on hot car metals, the faster the water evaporates the more water it will take to get the job done. Try washing your car in a shaded area or wash your car in the morning hours or evening time when it’s much cooler.
Wash less
It’s not uncommon to see people washing their cars once a week, however excessively washing your car may not be the answer. Some habits should be broken, instead of washing your car once a week and it really doesn’t need it that often; try going an extra week and washing it every two weeks or less.
Waterless car wash
Currently on the market you will find car washing products which boast the ability to clean your vehicle with the need for water.
