Decreasing Your Carbon Footprint With Low Energy Bulbs
By Tony Savour
So you are looking for a simple way to reduce your carbon footprint and also a cheaper and more energy efficient way to light your house… well what you need to look at doing is replacing your existing light bulbs and replacing them with energy efficient ones. The reason for this is that they use less than 2-% of the energy that normal light bulbs use. Another reason is that even though low energy bulbs use such little energy they can last up to 15 times longer than a standard bulb.
It has been proved time and time again that low energy light bulbs use such little energy compared to standard ones that many governments around the world are starting to phase out the existing incandescent bulbs so that everyone can start using energy saving bulbs and in the end save money and the environment. The UK plan to do this by 2011.
The money that you can save per year isn’t huge but it is still a lot over time and also the environment will be a lot better as a result. Findings have found that by changing just one light bulb to a low energy one will save you around £3-£4 per year which isn’t much but if you change all of your bulbs that’s around £50 a year which cant be bad!
Another things about the price of low energy bulbs is that once a lot of manufacturers phase out their production of old light bulbs they will be able to mass produce even more of these bulbs meaning that the price of them will certainly come down when they are able to do this efficiently..
One of the best things about low energy bulbs is that they can fit nicely into your existing light fittings meaning that you do not have to change anything other than the bulbs that you are buying. If you use a dimmer switch then you will need to buy a certain type of low energy bulb which works with these. There are many on the market so you will have no problem finding these.
Low energy bulbs do have a very long life span but some people seem to people if they are continually switched on and off then they will lose a lot of their life, the truth is that constant switching on and off every couple of seconds may shorten the lifespan of the energy saving bulb slightly it will not be reduced with everyday use where the bulb may be on for a bit before being switched off.
Another thing people tend to ask when they are thinking about the environment and low energy bulbs is do these bulbs take more energy than a normal bulb to be produced. This is a good question and the answer is that yes they do use more energy to be produced but when you put that low energy bulb into a home the energy that the bulb saves makes up for the what is used to produce it by tenfold.
